If you don't eat healthy food, how can you get ahead in life?
Our system subsidizes animal foods and processed foods so that unhealthy cheeseburgers are cheap while fresh produce is expensive. The poor eat cheeseburgers, not produce and get obese and sick.
The upside down nature of food subsidies is well documented in this graphic from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) here. They are designed to make unhealthy foods more available to consumers than healthy foods. The New York Times has reported that between 1979 and 2009, the price of healthy produce has increased while the prices of unhealthy foods such as meat and dairy have decreased due to these malignant food policies.
