9. The Metamorphosis

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning. But anybody can start today and make a new ending
— Maria Robinson

The Metamorphosis is the transition from the Caterpillar stage to the Butterfly stage for the modern industrial culture. At present, the political left and the political right in America seem to have formed media echo chambers that then revel in pointing out the absurdities of the other side. The political right, while implicitly acknowledging the veracity of computer models by rapidly evacuating from the projected paths of hurricanes, then turns around and pretends that all climate models are bogus and that climate change isn't happening. It has become an article of faith in the right to deny climate change even when entire states are burning up from some of the worst droughts in living memory. The intellectuals on the political left, while excoriating the right for being anti-science, cling to the pretense that infinite economic growth is possible on a finite planet. The trouble is that each side studiously ignores its own pet absurdities, while trumpeting those of the other side.

It is becoming increasingly clear that such a cultural transformation can only occur from the grassroots, beginning with those who are sick of the status quo.
